The benefits of using Dark Mode

I recently wrote a piece for my sustainable web development-focused side project on the benefits of using Dark Mode. The importance of creating more eco-friendly, less carbon-intensive websites is not to be underestimated. We all need to be doing more to help make the web a more sustainable entity.

Dark by design. Lighter in environmental impact.

Dark Mode is one small step to help towards creating a website that has a lower carbon impact. By moving to a design that uses dark colours you can reduce the battery drain on mobile devices by 1-23%. That might not seem like much, but extrapolate that over thousands of websites and millions of users, it adds up to a significant improvement. Less battery drain means less charging is needed. Therefore, less electricity and energy are used to power those devices over time. That’s a win-win in my book.

That’s why I decided to go with a dark design for this very website. Dark by design. Lighter in environmental impact.
